Gullah Days
Feb 17, 2020 6:30 PM
The Gullah culture, though borne of isolation and slavery, thrived on the US East Coast sea islands from pre-Civil War times until today, and nowhere more prominently than on Hilton Head Island, SC. On this small barrier island descendants of the first generations of Gullah people continue to preserve Gullah language, customs, arts, and cuisine. The three authors of Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956 are among those descendants, and in this book, they chronicle the amazing history of their secluded community from the Civil War through the 1950s, when real estate developers connected Hilton Head Island to the mainland with a bridge.

Shop More Local (shopmorelocal.org)
Mar 02, 2020 6:30 PM
A New Jersey native and former Montessori teacher, Meredith DiMuzio seems an unlikely champion for local business. However, if you run a store, restaurant or other small operation, chances are, she’s dropped in personally to hear about your needs. That’s because in the last year, she has excelled as the Executive Director of Shop More Local, representing more than 450 local businesses. Though she grew up in the garden state, she’s called the Lowcountry home for fifteen years. A mother of three, she personally knows many of the business owners she supports—they are fellow parents, neighbors, friends. On a Thursday, you may find Meredith with her kids at the Bluffton Farmers Market browsing its bounty of local goods. Don’t hesitate to say hi. |

Carla Golden Wellness - Message Therapy and Wholesome Veganism
From Carla's Web site: "When I was a little girl I wanted to become either a nurse or a 3rd grade teacher. Somehow, through the twists & turns of life, I have become a hybrid nurse-teacher taking good care of others through massage therapy and teaching others how to take great care of themselves through vegan whole food nutrition." |

"The Crumbs" - Homemade Cookie Bakers for Soldiers Jeanette Cram is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and a retired registered nurse. A graduate of the former St. Francis Xavier School of Nursing in 1962, she worked at the Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Psychiatry, for a number of years during her nursing career. She also started a volunteer program there, serving from 1972 to 1980, before moving to New Jersey. Since responding in 1990 to a soldier’s letter requesting home-baked cookies, she has become known as The Cookie Lady. Her passion for sending home-baked cookies to deployed soldiers developed into a cause that has attracted hundreds of dedicated bakers, known as the Crumbs, across the nation. Jeanette resides in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with her furry friends Sady and Lilly. Board member Meredity Hay will also be in attendance. Osprey Village
May 04, 2020 6:30 PM
OSPREY Village is a South Carolina nonprofit corporation founded in July, 2008, by parents of adults with developmental disabilities. All parents want to be assured their children have the opportunity to live in a safe, healthy community that will enrich their lives with friendship and social interaction. OSPREY Village is developing an “inclusive residential neighborhood with a purpose” that will provide individualized services for adults with special needs. The Village will be an intergenerational community that is open to anyone who would like to have the opportunity to interact and live in a “neighbor helping neighbor” village. NOTE: Osprey Village does not currently have any residential facilities or services available. We anticipate acquiring property on which to build our “inclusive intentional community” in the near future. However, it will likely take 2-3 years after that to put in the necessary infrastructure and utility services needed to begin building our residences. We do, however, currently provide community-based, individual employment support (job training) services and respite services to individuals in the Beaufort and Jasper county areas who have Medicaid waivers.
