Shop More Local (shopmorelocal.org)
Mar 02, 2020 6:30 PM
A New Jersey native and former Montessori teacher, Meredith DiMuzio seems an unlikely champion for local business. However, if you run a store, restaurant or other small operation, chances are, she’s dropped in personally to hear about your needs. That’s because in the last year, she has excelled as the Executive Director of Shop More Local, representing more than 450 local businesses. Though she grew up in the garden state, she’s called the Lowcountry home for fifteen years. A mother of three, she personally knows many of the business owners she supports—they are fellow parents, neighbors, friends. On a Thursday, you may find Meredith with her kids at the Bluffton Farmers Market browsing its bounty of local goods. Don’t hesitate to say hi. |

"The Crumbs" - Homemade Cookie Bakers for Soldiers Jeanette Cram is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and a retired registered nurse. A graduate of the former St. Francis Xavier School of Nursing in 1962, she worked at the Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Psychiatry, for a number of years during her nursing career. She also started a volunteer program there, serving from 1972 to 1980, before moving to New Jersey. Since responding in 1990 to a soldier’s letter requesting home-baked cookies, she has become known as The Cookie Lady. Her passion for sending home-baked cookies to deployed soldiers developed into a cause that has attracted hundreds of dedicated bakers, known as the Crumbs, across the nation. Jeanette resides in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with her furry friends Sady and Lilly. Board member Meredity Hay will also be in attendance. Osprey Village
May 04, 2020 6:30 PM
OSPREY Village is a South Carolina nonprofit corporation founded in July, 2008, by parents of adults with developmental disabilities. All parents want to be assured their children have the opportunity to live in a safe, healthy community that will enrich their lives with friendship and social interaction. OSPREY Village is developing an “inclusive residential neighborhood with a purpose” that will provide individualized services for adults with special needs. The Village will be an intergenerational community that is open to anyone who would like to have the opportunity to interact and live in a “neighbor helping neighbor” village. NOTE: Osprey Village does not currently have any residential facilities or services available. We anticipate acquiring property on which to build our “inclusive intentional community” in the near future. However, it will likely take 2-3 years after that to put in the necessary infrastructure and utility services needed to begin building our residences. We do, however, currently provide community-based, individual employment support (job training) services and respite services to individuals in the Beaufort and Jasper county areas who have Medicaid waivers.

Future Threats and Opportunies for a Barrier Island
Aug 17, 2020
Marc Frey was born with ink in his blood. His grandfather established a printing and publishing company in Zurich, Switzerland, which his father expanded considerably. After an undergraduate degree in business administration Frey absolved his mandatory Swiss military service. Instead of accepting a promotion to become an officer he moved to Paris to hone his craft and worked at the world renowned advertising agency Publicis as a media planner for 2 years. Wanting to round out his education, Frey attended the Monterey Institute of International Studies and graduated with an international M.B.A and a minor in foreign affairs. In 1982 Frey became the youngest CEO of a major European company (1,000+ employees) and lead a turn-around for the Jean Frey Group. Major accomplishments included a 38% revenue growth while reducing the debt structure at the same time; establishing “Weltwoche” as the premier influencer publication, negotiating a 10-year print contract for the Atlantic edition of Newsweek and obtain a license for Forbes magazine for the German speaking markets. In 1987, the company was sold to a larger holding company and Frey stayed on as the CEO for another year through the subsequent IPO. As the CEO of Berichthaus AG, Frey managed large real estate holdings and oversaw the investment banking side of the business. Following his entrepreneurial spirit Frey, his wife Anuska and their two sons moved to Hilton Head, SC in 1992 where he started his own company Frey Media which has grown into the Lowcountry’s largest locally owned publishing and marketing company encompassing several brands including Hilton Head and Bluffton Monthly (the voice of the community), several visitor publications and Shop More Local.com whos mission is to advocate the importance of supporting local businesses. More detailed information can be found on www.freymedia.com Frey and the business relocated to Bluffton to be closer to the emerging Lowcountry triangle and the company continues to grow. It’s most recent launch is a parenting multi-media platform: Parenthood IQ. When not working, Frey can be found playing tennis, riding the bike with his dog, cooking or enjoying the Arts both locally and abroad. Through his opinion column “Last Call”, serving on the Mayors Vision Task Force, speaking engagements and acting as the marketing arm for not for profit organizations Frey has been actively involved in the community. |
