The Sunset club started Happy Feet in 2018 at “The Children's Center”. We work with preschool children who are identified by the center as receiving some type of government support. This year the children will receive four pairs of socks and a pair of tennis shoes. New Balance helps by providing the shoes and socks at a 40%-50% discount off the retail price.
We pay for the shoes with money earned by working at “The Heritage Golf Tournament” and our mini golf event. To help cover the cost, we receive $2,500 from Rotary District 7770, which we match. This totals $5,000 to provide socks and shoes to the underprivileged children in our area.
The children's feet are measured ahead of time and ordered by the local store. The children come to the Children’s Center on Saturday morning to select their new shoes. They try on the shoes to make sure they fit and then wear them home. They are so proud of their new shoes and their expressions of joy are priceless.
This year The Children's Center requested we buy underwear for the children if we have money remaining after we pay for the shoes and socks. We also use any remaining money to supply books to the two Little Libraries at The Children's Center.
