SUCCESS!

HAPPY FEET 2.0
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2019

Saturday was THE DAY!  The "Fun" club had lots of fun with the annual "Project Happy Feet".  118 pairs of shoes were on hand and more than 404 pairs of socks were purchased or donated to provide preschool children at The Children's Center with both new shoes and socks for this school year.

Mothers and Dads had wide smiles and the children were "kicking up their feet".  One child received her very first pair of shoes - EVER!  Another child was so happy with her new shoes that she did a jig around the room exclaiming "The shoes made my feet dance!"   Children loved picking out their new shoes and were thrilled with the "fun" socks that were in their shoes.  Some even tried to pick their shoes based on the colorful and fun socks that were inserted in the shoes as they were displayed on the tables.

The Sunset Rotary members stood by with smiles of pleasure and contentment.  Every volunteer was clearly full of pride and excitement as they watched the expressions of joy and appreciation on the faces of both the parents and children as their child tried on their new shoes.

Approximately 60% of the children scheduled to receive shoes attended the Happy Feet event.  The remaining children will get their shoes when they arrive at school on Monday Nov 4.
One mother with three children expressed her heart-felt appreciation after her children were all fitted with new shoes when she said to her helping volunteer:

"You just don't know how much this kindness helps us out".

Well - actually - - WE DO KNOW!   We know because Jody knows - - and she tells us.  Also, we have members and spouses on the board of the Children's Center who know exactly how much this program means to both the parents and those young children.  Other members know some of the parents through personal interactions and are fully aware of their situations and how such an event helps out.

I would like to express my personal thanks to all the Sunset Rotary members who were able to help the Friday evening set up, returned for the main event early Saturday morning, and participated in the distribution of shoes to those wonderful little kids.  Thanks to those who picked up the shoes, thanks for those who searched for and found the socks.  Thanks for those who arranged the tables so wonderfully.  Thanks to Ginger and Toney for gathering the items for the refreshment table and then to Ron for managing the table. Thanks to John and Mary for managing the check-in table.  Thanks to Alan and Amy for working the check-out table.  Thanks to Amy for stepping in to help with the overall management of everything at the last minute - - and for being such a great “understudy” in preparation for heading up the Happy Feet project next year.  Thanks for every Sunset member who arrived early Saturday morning to finish last minute chores, stayed the morning to work with the children and their families and then made quick clean up and re-order of the room.  Thanks to the fellows who gave the mascot a trip or two around the room.  That was hot work, and Ralph got a souvenir scratch on his nose!

Thank you so much Sunset Rotarians for making this year’s Happy Feet project a success.

Please annotate your calendar for this same time period next year and join in the fun for Happy Feet 3.0.   The specific date will be dependent upon the approval of our District Grant and the distribution of the funding.  You will be notified early so you can make plans to join in the FUN!
